Game Day Deep Dish Pizza
Today is Game day in New Zealand and America. The game is Rugby Union and the clash is between the New Zealand All Blacks and the United States Eagles. Happily, game day also means game day food. – and even here in good old New Zealand, we tend to look to the US for our food inspiration on game day. Actually we don’t really call it game day over here, there is no equivalent term to describe it, we just refer to “watching the test (match)”.
Today’s game is being held at Soldier Field in Chicago, one of my favorite cities, and also the home of Deep Dish Pizza, one of my favorite Pizza’s. It’s a little too far for a day trip to Chicago from way down south here in Queenstown, so I’ll bring a bit of Chicago here.
The recipe I’m using today comes from here http://www.realdeepdish.com/2011/12-29-deep-dish-101-lesson-3-chicago-pizza-styles-and-maybe-a-dough-recipe/
All of the meat featured in this pizza is Pork based. Calabrese Spicy Salami, Bacon and Pork Sausage. I’m also adding the obligatory homemade Tomato sauce, and odd herbs and spices.
The Cheese portion is simply a couple of good handfuls of grated Mozzarella, plus some freshly grated Parmesan on top.
The dough couldn’t be easier to make, and the sauce is simply a drained tin of crushed tomatoes. The sausage goes in raw, so the prep is pretty easy, but the results are authentic, and delicious.
All of the instructions for making, proofing the dough, and filling/baking the Pizza are on the link provided, and turn out a terrific Pizza so I won’t repeat them here (I made mine without any changes to the recipe provided)
This is so simple to make, it’s going to be on high repeat in our house for some time to come. Next time I think I’ll make a Chili Prawn one for me, and a Bacon one for Megan (mmm bacon).
If you didn’t catch the game, the AB’s beat the Eagles 74 – 6. It actually didn’t look as bad as the score sounds. Well done USA.
